This handbook includes all the texts that will be covered in the subject, during the
lectures and seminars. Given that our main aim is to develop your confidence in the
subject, we have also decided to include exercises that will let you revise what we see in
class and others for further practice. Therefore, this handbook should be taken as a
guide.
You must take this subject seriously, as it will introduce skills that will be relevant to the
study of literature in the subsequent academic years. The subject will help you develop
your understanding of contexts as well as some of the conventions established in literary
genres, grasp the meaning of texts and, above all, it will help you analyze all sorts of
texts (poems, novels and plays).
